For the Grandchildren (Ages 4-12)
- The Color Mystery: Next time you’re out, drop a red object and a blue object into the water (on a string!). Which one stays bright the longest?
- Activity: Build a Secchi Disk (a black and white circle) to see how clear Chuck’s “soup” is today!
For the Parents (The Guardians)
- The Clarity Challenge: Check the Wisconsin DNR Lake Data Portal. Look up Matthews Lake and see if our clarity is trending toward “Crystal Clear” or “Misty Miso Soup.”
- Sharpen Your Senses: Read The Curious Naturalist by Sy Montgomery for tips on sharpening your own observation skills.
For the Grandparents (The Legends)
- Shoreline Legacy: Check out the UW-Extension Lakes Program for “Native Planting” guides. It’s a great summer project to do with the grandkids to ensure Chuck’s “HD Vision” stays sharp for another 25 years.
- Deep Dive: Read Beneath The Surface: A Natural History of a Fisherman’s Lake by by Bruce M. Carlson (Author), Bruce Granquist (Illustrator).
